Good Move: Starting Pilates

One of the best decisions I made last year was to get a membership to a yoga studio.

I figured I needed to make better (read: healthier) life choices and that I enjoyed yoga in college, so why not start again? Little did I know, I chose a studio with two fantastic Pilates instructors!

So one Friday, I decided to see what Pilates was all about…all I knew was that it was a core workout and that skinny women seemed to love it. I walked out of the studio sweaty, cursing my instructor for her endless desire for “just 10 more!”…and knew I wanted to get back to that class as soon as possible.

While I already shared 5 tips for mat Pilates from a beginner, I thought it would be a good idea to share why I enjoy the workout so much:

Good Move: Starting Pilates
  • I practice at least once a week, preferably twice a week
  • I feel like I’m going to throw up at least once during class
  • I can feel my core getting stronger
  • I can feel my endurance improving
  • I can feel my posture improving
  • I’m tempted to go to a dedicated Pilates studio to experience more of what Pilates has to offer

Interested in starting Pilates or Yoga? I recommended this yoga starter kit to Megan of The Nerd Nest and she is getting some great use out of it. You get a yoga mat, block, strap, and DVD to get you started. If you’re looking for a mat with a bit more oompf to it, I currently own a Manduka eKo in Sage…but looking at the options, I wouldn’t mind an acai-colored one!

You can read more of my posts about Pilates and Yoga, if you’re interested.

Totally loving that kit! I highly recommend it for beginners. There’s a post for that in the works.

Awesome! I’m trying to think of a good way to share my home practice, and how I warm up/cool down for climbing using yoga. I’m looking forward to your post and I’m so happy you like the kit. It’s a great starting point, don’t you think?

I haven’t tried Pilates yet, though one of the yoga studios that I regularly attend classes does offer it. Considering that strengthening my core is inching up higher on my list of things I need to do, I should probably go check it out.

It’s a great workout! There is a lot of yoga-esque principals taught and sometimes you’ll get a ‘yogalaties’ type workout ;)
